We are here to work on your behalf supporting and representing the GB Potato Industry.
We will be operating as GB Potatoes Organisation Ltd, incorporated as a business limited by guarantee and not for profit. ALL stakeholders will have the opportunity to become members; there will be no one controlling influence.
Our key functions
We believe that the potato industry in Great Britain has much to gain from working together when we have common interests. This website is about the future of the British Potato Industry. Anyone who has an interest in that is welcome here.
The industry needs a “respected voice” that can speak to Defra, devolved governments, media and assurance bodies in a way that no individual business or trade body can. GB Potatoes is an umbrella body which can deal with reputational issues or crisis management – a function much needed and often.
This is also a co-ordination role. We are not a body with the budget to undertake much R&D off its own bat, but we do envisage a co-ordination role. Where groups of businesses, or syndicates, want to get together to fund research, which would remain their own intellectual property, GB Potatoes can facilitate this and reduce the risk of duplication. GB Potatoes is a body to provide a platform to enable collaboration between businesses in the supply chain as and when it suits their needs.
None of this will just happen on its own, though. It requires a critical mass of businesses to be prepared to get involved. Now is the opportunity.
We have to start somewhere. Membership is voluntary and by subscription; the levy is a thing of the past. The GB Potatoes board believes that the subscription of £10/ha for growers and 10p per tonne for first purchasers will represent growers and first purchasers working in partnership, supported by the allied trades who can join by paying an associate subscription. It’s vital that the organisation is kept lean and efficient, and that’s why we think it is right to keep the subscription as low as possible.
TAKING CONTROL
This is an organisation that allows the industry to take control of its own destiny by providing its own leadership and making its own decisions. We hope you are on board. Please email info@gb-potatoes.co.uk should you have any questions.
