Water and Drought
Drought Conditions Could Continue into 2026 Despite Recent Rainfall

Despite some much-needed rain this autumn, large parts of England remain in drought as we head into winter. While the rain received over the last couple of months is very much welcome the National Drought Group (NDG) has warned that unless we see sustained and above-average rainfall over the next several months, England must prepare for an ongoing drought in 2026.
This year’s record dry spring and hottest summer since records began have left water levels severely depleted. Reservoir storage is currently around 63%, compared with a normal level of about 76% for this time of year. Some reservoirs in the South and South West remain below 30%.
The Environment Agency has asked all sectors – including water companies and farmers – to continue building resilience. Farmers are being encouraged to check their abstraction licences, look at on-farm storage options, and work with neighbours to share water where possible.
Impact on Potato Growers
For potato growers, the outlook underlines the importance of planning ahead for water security. With abstraction restrictions still in place in some regions, access to irrigation water next season may be tight. This reflects a pattern we may see repeatedly if dry conditions persist, meaning growers need to plan for water constraints not just this year but potentially in future seasons as well.
The situation also highlights the value of collaboration – whether that’s sharing local water intelligence, storage, or experience. GB Potatoes will continue to monitor the situation and work with partners to ensure government and water authorities understand the vital need for water within the potato industry, and that growers have the latest information on water availability and any regulatory developments.
As the NDG stressed, water remains a finite and valuable resource. A wet winter would be a welcome relief – but until then, everyone has a role to play in making every drop count.
