GB Potatoes launches second year of Potato Industry Development Programme

Following the success of the 2026 inaugural Potato Industry Development Programme, GB Potatoes, in association with the British Potato Trade Association (BPTA) has opened applications for 2027.

Aimed at new entrants to the potato industry, the programme offers participants a comprehensive understanding of the sector, the latest industry insights and the chance to build lasting networks across the industry.

Taking place across three sessions, the successful candidates will have the opportunity to engage with some of the leading packers, processors, researchers and scientists within the sector, as well as those who are helping shape future innovations.

Three phases, three regions

  • England, 15-18 February 2027 – starting in Scarborough, participants will be visiting leading brands in the industry including McCains, Branston, and Tayto, as well as potato processing machinery specialists Haith Manufacturing, to build a sound understanding of potato processing and production.
  • Scotland, 15-17 June 2027 – commencing at the James Hutton Institute, the focus shifts to commercial seed potato breeding, potato growing, blight, and PCN, with visits to GenTech Propagation, McCains Seed, a seed grower, and SRUC.
  • Parliamentary visit, November 2027 – held in London, this phase gives participants insight into agricultural policy decision-making, how it can be influenced through lobbying, and why it matters for the next generation to get involved.

Louise Greenhill, Contracts Manager for Agrico, and a participant in the inaugural programme, said:

“I’ve really enjoyed being part of the Potato Industry Development Programme, from visiting processing factories and farms in England to seeing the research, science and innovation taking place in Scotland.

“It’s been fascinating to see how all the different parts of the industry connect, and meeting other young people in the industry has been just as valuable. I’m looking forward to the remaining legs and hopefully playing a part in the future of the industry.”

Alex Godfrey, Chair of GB Potatoes, said:

“When we first developed this programme, back at the start of 2026, we wanted to support those who were at the start of their career and looking to grow their skills and knowledge. We were overwhelmed by the number of the responses, and the impact we are already seeing with the current cohort, has highlighted the need for a structured programme, that supports the development of our future leaders and encourages long-lasting connections.

“With the sector facing many challenges, not least the current drought, it is more important than ever that we continue to invest in skills and training, so we continue to drive resilience, innovation and effective communications with our consumers.

“I would encourage anyone looking to grow their career to consider applying for the next programme and would like to express my thanks to the BPTA for partnering with GB Potatoes to deliver this incredible opportunity.”

The programme includes accommodation, meals, and minibus travel as part of each study visit. Participants must make their own arrangements for travel to and from the start and end point of each visit. The cost is £1,200 for GB Potatoes members and £1,700 for non-members.

Applications close 2nd October 2026. With limited places available and strong interest anticipated, we encourage all applicants to submit a well-considered application – apply via the button below.
